Tora Leaves Fritters. This one is my moms speciality. So the credit for this goes to her. Last night she got her hands on the much awaited Tora Leaves (we call it Taikilo).
It dint take us much time to agree upon making Taikilo Ambado. For Taikilo exists just to be made into a fritter and eaten.
So here is my mother version of Tora Leaves Fritters famous called Taikilo Ambado or Taikile Dangar.
Tora Leaves Fritters (Taikilo Ambado)
Tora leaves (commonly called Taikilo) are found during the monsoon. It is very popular in the Konkani household of Karnataka and other places. Tora fritters are crispy balls made from Tora leaves mixed in a coarse batter of rice & Toor Daal (Pigeon Pea) which are the main ingredients.
It is deep fried in oil and can be had as an Appetiser during lunch or dinner or a snack. Its best had with Hot Dal & Steamed Rice.

- 1 Cup White Rice
- 1/4 Cup Toor Daal (Piegon Pea)
- 1 Cup Onion (Chopped)
- 5 Nos Red Chillies (Dried)
- 1/2 Teaspoon Asafoetida (Hinga)
- Salt (As per taste)
- 1 Cup Water
- 1/2 Cup Coconut (Grated)

Soak the Rice and Toor Dal in water for about 30-45 minutes.
One the rice and toor dal is ready, in a mixture grinder add the grated coconut, chillies, soaked rice and the toor dal. Grind to a thick coarse paste. Add little water as required. Take care that it doesn’t make the paste watery.
Now to the coarse mixture add the Chopped Tora Leaves and chopped onions. Add the Asafoetida and salt as per taste. Now make small balls and keep aside.
Heat oil in a frying pan. Once the oil is hot, add the Tora Leaves balls and fry until reddish brown.
Take it off the heat and serve as an appetiser with lunch or dinner. Can also be had as a snack with hot tea.
